Who is Robert Wright?

I am an African Nova Scotian social worker and sociologist.  As a social worker, I have served in a number of positions over the past 20 years in education, child welfare, justice and community settings.  I also maintain a small private practice.  In September 2010 I went back to school to finish a PhD in sociology.  As a sociologist I am studying identity, race, power and justice.  I am particularly interested in the overrepresentation of African Nova Scotians in the criminal justice system and what the afrocentric discourse has done/is doing to inform us about that.  I am currently writing a paper on Identity, Race and Power.  I'm also reworking some of my "grey literature" contributions into bona fide, publishable academic work.  Wish me luck!

In August of 2011, after teaching as a sessional instructor at Mount Saint Vincent University for 3 years, I accepted a 9 month term academic appointment there.  So until April of 2012 I will be teaching full-time in the Department of Child and Youth Study.  Those who know me will think this is a pretty good fit.

20120202  Today I presented a workshop to Correctional Service of Canada employees in Halifax.  The event was organized by the local office's Ethnocultural Services Rep.  This is material that I continue to adapt and (I think) improve.  The concept of racisim-informed cultural competence is a new idea I'm working with.
