Clinical Work

Over the past 20 years I have always maintained a private practice in addition to my day job.  I have a registered Private Practice in Nova Scotia and in New Brunswick.  I am also considering registering in Prince Edward Island.  I am able to see clients who are self-referred or mandated by a government agency.  I am a Blue Cross Certified Medical Provider for those whose Blue Cross coverage includes social work services.  I am also able to see students at Dalhousie University who are covered under the RWAM health plan that is mandatory for all students there.

The clinical services I can provide include:

Assessment and Treatment of Male Victims of Sexual Abuse:  Whether abused as children or as adults, it is increasingly recognized that males are victims of sexual abuse in larger numbers than previously believed.  I am now accepting referrals for individual and group therapy to address the behavioural, emotional and family based problems that result from the sexual abuse experienced by boys and men.  It is my hope that referrals may lead to the development of a professionally led, therapeutic support group for men who have experienced sexual abuse.  Please email me for more information.

Counseling and Therapy:  I have provided counselling services to individuals and families using a range of methods over a defined length of time or number of sessions. I can provide counseling to adults, youth, and children who are experiencing a wide range of issues including healing from past abuse and other traumas, adjusting to major life transitions and losses and improving sexual and intimate relationships. Therapy may also be helpful for individuals who are coping with a chronic health problem or mental illness. This work is always done in consultation with your primary health care provider.

Single Session Therapy:
A type of brief therapy - single session therapy can be an effective and efficient way to gain perspective on a major life problem and jump start the process of self-directed change and healing. I have used this method successfully with families and children and youth experiencing a range of behavioral and emotional problems.  I provide here a brief description of single session therapy.

Home Based Family Therapy and Coaching:  As a former child protection worker and parental capacity assessor I have extensive experience providing assessment and intervention services to individuals and families in their homes. The home setting is often an excellent context to observe family patterns and problems where they usually occur. Furthermore, addressing problems and changing patterns of interactions in the moment can provide families with the guidance and confidence they desire. Home-based services may be the sole method of working with a family or may be used in conjunction with office based therapy. Think of it as a Nanny 911 service for a wider range of family issues.

Traumatic Event Debriefing:
Whether the trauma one experiences is related to a violent or sexual assault, a motor vehicle accident, industrial accident or a natural disaster, properly processing the event within 72 hours can prevent long term emotional and behavioral consequences associated with post-traumatic stress disorder. I have provided this service to individuals, families, work teams and groups of individuals who experienced the same potentially traumatic event.

Mediation Services:  Mediation is the process by which a neutral third person (the mediator) brings two or more parties together for problem solving and decision making. Often when the parties are very far apart in their perspective or when emotions are running high a skilled mediator can be a key to coming to a satisfactory conclusion in an efficient manner. I have served as a mediator in matters of family conflict, divorce and separation, family business conflicts and workplace conflicts.

Culture Race and Identity:  As a former Race Relations Coordinator and as a consultant in the field of race relations and cultural competence I have provided a wide range of clients with a wide range of services. I have also taught and written in this field.  A video of a presentation I delivered on cultural competence is available online here.

Forensic Assessments and Therapy:
"Forensic" is a word that simply means that something is connected with the law or used in courts of law and other legal settings. As a therapist for both perpetrators and victims of a wide range of violent crime and as a clinical assessor of families involved in court procedures in the family courts (child welfare and otherwise), I have developed an expertise in forensic practice.  Specifically, I have conducted assessments and treatment for both Adult and Juvenile Sex Offenders and Perpetrators of Violent Crimes.  I have also developed an expertise in Parental Capacity Assessment.
